Specifics on the Class
Swedish Naversom, a technique also called Birch Bark Weaving, takes its name from the frame originally used to support the work. The lacy appearance and geometric nature of the designs will remind many embroiderers of Hardanger, but the fact that Naversom is created on a grid of threads will appeal to canvas workers as well.
Naversom uses only four stitches to create a wide variety of designs. Two of the stitches (darning and diagonal) use a heavier weight thread, while
the remaining two (goose–eye and ground) are created with finer threads. Designing additional projects with this technique is fairly straightforward, and additonal interest is created by using non-traditonal threads.
This is a two day workshop, focusing on a variety of approaches to the darning stitch. The darning patterns used include: Split Darning; Pyramid Darning; Right Angle Darning; and Scotch Darning. Also included is the diagonal stitch, used in a triple layering.
During the first day, we will spend the majority of the time learning the basic darning and diagonal stitches. For the practice stitches, a small coaster will be stitched on pre–drawn linen fabric. Traditional materials will be provided for the practice coaster (no options allowed.)
On the second day, stitching will begin on the larger doily. There are four color and fabric choices available for the larger doily. Each of the items pictured was stitched from the same chart. The colored version was stitched with Pearl cotton and linen threads on 40 count Raw Newcastle linen. For the ecru doily, three weights of silk and 35 count linen was used. The white version uses 32 count Belfast linen and Pearl cotton. The default kit of traditional 35 count linen and linen threads will be provided in a ecru color scheme (not shown above.)
Some pre-work will be required, to pull the grid threads for the large doily. The practice coaster will be pre-drawn for you.
The default kit provided will include the practice materials (pre-drawn coaster, suitable thread) and traditional materials for the larger doily. The default kit will be provided for $50.00, and will contain 35-count Linen, Rainbow Linen, Londerderry Linen and Danish Flower threads. If arranged with the instructor in advance, three additional kits can be selected. The white or colored version as described above will be provided at the same cost, or a silk kit is also available for an additional $15.00.
Student should bring to class: a small hoop - approximately 6" , stretcher bars to fit the project, rust proof thumb tacks, 6–8 paper clips, basting thread, and some way to moisten the linen thread.
