Swedish Naversom, a technique also called Birch Bark Weaving, takes its name from the frame originally used to support the work.
The lacy appearance and geometric nature of the designs will remind many embroiderers of Hardanger, but the fact that
Naversom is created on a grid of threads will appeal to canvas workers as well.
Naversom uses only four stitches to create a wide variety of designs. Two of the stitches (darning and diagonal) use a heavier weight thread, while
the remaining two (goose eye and ground) are created with finer threads. The designs are worked on a fabric grid, prepared by withdrawing threads from a basic linen fabric.
In this course, you will be working two projects. The practice coaster allows you to learn the technique and finishing steps in a small object.
This coaster should be completed when turned in for evaluation. The second project (a larger doily) is more advanced, and does not need to be entirely completed when submitted.
This course was written to explain the basics of working with Naversom.
The unique techniques are explained with diagrams and close ups of the project.
It will appeal to an embroiderer interested in expanding their knowledge of Ethnic techniques. The session titles are as follows:
- Session 1 - Getting Started
- Session 2 - Basic Darning Stitch
- Session 3 - Diagonal and additional darning stitches
- Session 4 - Pulled thread stitches
- Session 5 - Finishing the Project
Class materials are available through suppliers identified in the class booklet. A kit (using traditional materials) is also available through this website for a cost of approximately $35.00 - $40.00 (plus S & H)
Student supplies: Stretcher bars to fit the project, rust proof thumb tacks, thread straightener bars, and basting thread.
